Hip Hop More Alive in 2010 thx to the web

Three years ago, many consumers were not aware of the internets vast archive and information on new music from artists. In the mainstream music scene, "hip-crap" was being played 24/7 on my local NYC stations , hot 97, 105.1fm (rumors have it payola might be involved). You had big media outlets like MTV and the like, touting artists which, have ties back to their giant viacom empire.

Meanwhile, all over the US of A hip-hop heads were in a quandry. The more techies of the group never skipped a beat, Foriegn exchange wa forme dove rthe internet. The others waited til the likes of kidz in the hall and drake to realize the internet could actually produce stars and with a distribution model unparallel to anything out there. Stars in the making are being given 'shine time'. Long live the internet, long live Good Hip hop.

P.s I should say in backing of mainstream media, in that it really was never an outlet for good hip hop. Those who did make it in the ' golden era of hip-hop', did so because it was new. Once a tribe went mainstream, so did the chance of artisits like them ever having that kind of sucess.

Bio:

2003 marks the introduction of two Canadian new comers to the global dance music scene, Benz&MD. Currently with seven signed compositions, a handful of remixes and endless praises by some of the world's top producers and DJ's; the duo have a very promising future ahead for them. Their sound can be described as a fresh, sophisticated blend of deep melodies, twisted grooves and tight arrangements that captivates the listener from start to finish.

Originating from London, Ontario, Canada, Greg Benz and Marco Di Carlo were introduced at a local club where Greg was holding a monthly residency. Their mutual admiration for progressive house, atmospheric breaks and techno, soon led them to the studio where their experimenting and writing inevitably set the foundation of what their sound offers today.

While growing up in Southern Ontario, music was a dominant force in the duos lives. Hip Hop, house music and compilations by Sasha and Digweed served as a preface to Greg's DJ career. With over 8 years as a DJ under his belt, Greg has played along side some of the worlds top Dj's such as Max Graham, Richie Hawtin, John Acquaviva, Chris Fortier, Donalde Glaude, Dave Ralph and Misstress Barbara. Greg's knowledge for the mechanics of dance music and his understanding of what it takes to make a crowd move are not only evident in his hometown but also spans the global scene. In April of 2003 John Digweed himself invited Benz to share the airwaves with him on his esteemed radio program on Kiss FM. The international feedback of Greg' s set for the KISS FM show has positioned Greg Benz as the next generation of up and coming DJ's to watch for.

While Marco's tastes led him to a formal musical training background, his teaching and playing music as a teen helped shape his musical vocabulary. Marco dipped his melodic hands into all types of music from classical, jazz and blues, to soul and hard rock. The guitar was his instrument of choice but after being introduced to the lush and intricate sounds of groups like Underworld, Orbital, Depeche Mode and Way Out West; Marco soon switched over to synthesizers, samplers and software-based instruments. Also an accomplished and world wide recognized digital artist, Marco draws on his musical talents as an extension of his artistry. Where by the layering and texturing of sounds can be paralleled to painting with colours and composition.

Benz&MD’s initial demo material received enthusiastic responses from several established record labels and prompted John Digweed to personally call and comment on the quality of each composition. The initial seven demos were all signed and remixes were also commissioned. International support was received from such DJ's as Satoshie Tomeii, John Acquaviva, Jerry Bonham, Matthew Dekay, Mick Burns, Shiloh, Starkid, Subsky, Fred Numpf and Brad Copeland.

With more productions and remixes already in the works for 2004, you can listen for a more tougher, deeper polished sound from the duo who will continue pushing the sonic envelope to emotionally charge their listeners on and off the dance floor.

DJ mag puts out, a top 100 DJ list every year. And every year, this list is usually out a couple months before WMC and adds buzz and excitement to the festivitites. Every year, I see the list and I usually disagree on their choices, not that the chosen people aren't worthy of this distinction, but here in the US, where some of those artists get little time in front of the audience, the list must be fitted to the scene out here.

Here is a top 10 DJ list American style, based on those in the DJmag Top 100 who are gaining steam here. If this were Sweden, Germany or the Netherlands, it would be a whole different story.

I will be using Youtube Videos to illustrate my list. Seems to work well for all. Look out for my NYC TOP 10 Electronic DJ's. Coming soon.

1. Armin Van Buuren - I have not seen armin perform, EVER. I have however, told and converted about 20+ people to his music. During the College DJ years. Armin Van buren 'State of trance 2005, listening parties are not unommon for me. 2009, definitely has seen Armin sell out shows, globally. Hope to see him at WMC 2010. 3. Tiesto - In America, tiesto still pulls in a huge crowd and sells out time after time. I saw him in Sept. at the Hammerstein. Cool show. I must say, that it seems he has all but forgotten fans like myself who are in search of sunrise I-IV heads. All our favorites have been scrubbed from his sets, still love his sets but no excitement anymore for me. It seems he's more into super-stardom. For this we bump him to the Middle of the pack.

Talk About intros. SO i decided to add most of the album, it was soo good. This is my FAV. of the sunrise albums...

4. David Guetta - Can't say much about David guetta, he's big out here in NYC. I have heard a couple of his tracks, they are dope. I like the black eyes peas remix, umm.. Here are some tracks.

5. Ferry Corsten - Ferry has always been able to give eclectic mixes. With many global live radio shows, he still manages to give us nice albums and sets that always seem to pick up any somber days.

The great thing about the electronic community is that social media is embedded in its dna. before email marketing was fashionable, the industry had pioneered its use in getting out mixes, info and the like.

When Virgin Galactic were looking for some atmospheric music to herald the launch of their ground-breaking 'SpaceShipTwo' this week, they turned to the UK's biggest DJs, Above & Beyond.

At an event hosted by Richard Branson in the Mojave Desert, the track chosen to accompany the official unveiling of SpaceShipTwo was Above & Beyond's club anthem 'Buzz', which samples Buzz Aldrin's original moon-landing dialogue. To mark the occasion, guests were also handed a special 'Galactic Grooves' USB wristband, featuring a selection of Above & Beyond's songs.

After the unveiling and naming by governors Richardson and Schwarzenegger, Above & Beyond performed an exclusive DJ set in front of an audience of 800 dignitaries, celebrities and soon-to-be astronauts, plus the assembled global media.

I just listened to the track. I'd put it at a, 3.5 of 5 stars, in terms of what the group has produced before. I would say, that I have a slight bias to anything vocal trance from them. Check it out for yourself. Enjoy.

I had that same feeling, looking for Above & beyond 'Tristate, looking a bit more, I found covers for Fragma's - ' Miracle(tocame). To make things a bit interesting, I wanted to take these two songs and have them go along side a cover, for a popular song like, Kigns of Leon's ' Use Somebody.

My burbschwagger, naturally tells me, there really is no way to arrive at an event except, being fashionably late. It could be that, I fall victim to procrastination. Working on it though; I go to Zen Habits. It could also be, that my 'schwag (not to be confused with 'swag) is non-threatening. lol. For the past year, I have been the resident DJ at Burbschwagger, a niche content producer for the more savvy bunch of the MTV Generation. I help with, making music for the video projects as well as scouring the web for, music for their projects; It's pretty awesome. The gig started last summer, and it's been a whirlwind ride, all my mixes are on the burbschwagger site under Audio. I received some emails this thanksgiving weekend asking how the format of the blog will be. It's this simple.

I make mixtapes from music, which I feel you should hear. Instead of a track listing, there are artist spotlights from the song's artist, which include the track name, a little about the artist, inspiration for the song being on the mixtape, extra additional info, social media info and such....e.t.c

Also, I will be scouring the web looking for, events, festivals, albums available for download and purchase and put that information up as well.

Loving the music scene here in NYC, any information on shows or the like, will also be put up.

The first time I heard, Little Brother's 2003 Lp 'The Listening, I bought the full album on itunes and played it nonstop 100 + times. I do that, with most music i like. via wikipedia, 'your favorite rapper's, favorite rapper had this to say about this album.

I don't know many people, "in-the-know" who know this artist: at least, last time I checked. The lucky few are, 'far and between. There's just something about the way, 'illpoetic brings you into his world. From the soulful hits, to the tasty like treats, that 'heads know all the words, party hits and the gritty illustration of ohio. Love it. ill Poetic's "Home" from 2007's 'The World is Ours' is the first track on the HHAD (Hip Hop Ain't Dead) Mixtape Vol. 1. If you haven't read up on Illpoetic, get on it! As you know, I love hip-hop. I have to say, I like 'all types' of hip hop because, just like my preference is the "'backpack' underground & soulful side", my siblings, young and old fall into the; "gangsta - ski mask way", "the song is the dance" and other colorful niches which, exist in hip hop today. Understanding their preference is important to our relationship building.

It was the summer of 2006 and I was back home in NYC, a grad student loving life. I had been listening to some pretty 'hot shit' and, wanted to share it with a mix that could express how amazing it took my mind to all these different worlds. All through that summer, "Hip-hop was being touted as being 'dead', it was at the top of every marketing message. Many quality albums were released that year with no commercial success in the charts. My answer was the "Hip-Hop Ain't Dead mixtapes". I plugged in the new music I heard and those, which brought me to them in this first volume. Some of the artists were unknowns at the time and superstars now. This makes me happy, and with further ado here is Hip-Hop Ain’t Dead Vol.1. Track List, coming soon...
